"A Change of Heart" by Emma

Recently my class had a spelling assignment (when Mrs.Allen was gone at a Words Their Way training) where we could choose between writing sentences, making a comic strip, or writing a short story, all using at least twelve of our spelling words (homophones). I chose to write a short story that I later titled: "A Change of Heart."

Here is the story that I wrote:

Once upon a time, there was a king, King Roland. This king was rich, and he had a wonderful throne. Sadly, King Roland thought that his throne was rather plain. The king started to think,"How can I make my throne more spectacular, more attractive, more noticable?" While thinking, King Roland walked out onto his impressive pier overlooking the bay.
Just then, a mysterious plane zoomed by. King Roland  was so deep in thought that he didn't notice. The plane zoomed by again, this time looming closer. King Roland was startled. This time he had heard and was suspicious. "Who goes there? If it's another fan here to impress me, you're just a waste of time!"
All was silent. Thinking that the plane was gone for good, King Roland resumed his thoughts. He was peacefully contemplating when out of nowhere, the plane zooms past the pier, scoops up King Roland, and flies off. King Roland wails. "Put me down!" he cries. With no response, King Roland looked up from where he was being held at the underside of the plane."Hello? Anybody there? You're flying with me on the underside of your plane. You knew that, right?" King Roland asked.
While flying, King Roland saw many villagers that were in great need. Their homes were not the best; the people were hungry and thirsty. King Roland was disappointed in himself. "How could I have been so blind? They're in a great need, and I was totally oblivious to it!" he exclaimed. King Roland devised a plan to get off the plane. When the plane reached a patch of trees, he would jump and hopefully land safely.
With a lot of scrapes and bruises, King Roland's plan worked. When he got to his castle, he forgot his throne and donated almost all of his money to the villagers. Everybody lived happily ever after.

Oreo Phases of the Moon

To help us learn about the phases of the moon, we used Oreos to sculpt the different phases and then we put them in sequential order.

The following websites helped us in this activity; although, we used toothpicks instead of utensils for the sculpting part:

Angry Birds- SPACE!

Since we had so much fun using Angry Birds to review verbs (see our post: Angry Verbs), we decided to incorporate Angry Birds again to help us learn a little about the planets in our Solar System.

Our Solar System Model

Recently, we've been learning about our Solar System, so we made a a class model using the guidelines on pg. 2 (in the extension section) from this website to help us: http://meteorite.unm.edu/site_media/pdf/outdoorscale.pdf

Check out the video below to learn more about our experience, and stay tuned for our planetary virtual museums coming soon!

Our 1st Storybirds

In our latest writing project, we used Storybird to write short stories and incorporated at least some alliteration at some point in the story. Originally, this project was intended to be a short, 3-5 page story, but it quickly evolved into something far more involved.

Feel free to read, share, and enjoy our original stories written by us, the writers of Room 121.
