Verb Snowmen

Last week we learned about the different types of verbs--action, linking, and helping--, and then we made verb snowmen using Tagxedo for the bodies, and our own creativity for the rest. It was a fun, festive way to review verbs as we are launching into our study of independent clauses this week!

Simple Machines: Gallery Walk

On Friday, we continued our study on simple machines by engaging in a gallery walk.

In order to do so, however, groups of 4 students collaborated to create an informational poster on a simple machine: how it worked, how it made work easier, common examples of that particular simple machine, and other facts they felt were pertinent for others to learn about their simple machine.

Then we placed the posters all around the room, turned on classical music, and pretended to be in a museum as we walked around and took notes about all the other simple machines.

We will be using what we learned to help us when we begin designing, constructing, and testing out our own machines in the upcoming weeks.

Check out the brief, only slightly-edited, video below of our gallery walk:

Here's a closer look at the posters:

I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Pie...

On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break, we read I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie, and enjoyed some time together getting a bit crazy about the absurd amount of things the old lady swallowed, being entertained by the goofy pictures, and laughing as we eventually recited the words together.

Then before we began writing our own versions, we began with a model from the book by using the main line: "I know an old lady who swallowed a pie, a Thanksgiving pie which was really too dry. Perhaps she'll die."

Then we created our own line together as a class: "I know an old lady who swallowed some mashed potatoes while she also craved a bunch of tomatoes. She swallowed the potatoes to flavor the pie, the Thanksgiving pie, which was really too dry. Perhaps she'll die."

Once we put it altogether, we then branched off and began creating our own lines; we first created our own lines, and then we had time to create more with a partner or on our own.

While Tuesday was an incredibly busy day with extra specials and an assembly, we had some time for some of us to share. Check out the following videos below to hear what we came up with for the old lady to swallow:

In case you're interested, by the way, this is what mine (Mrs.Allen) turned out to be:

*I know an old lady who swallowed a pie, a Thanksgiving pie, which was really too dry. Perhaps she’ll die.   (*from the book)

**I know an old lady who swallowed mashed potatoes while she also craved a bunch of tomatoes.

She swallowed the potatoes to flavor the pie, the Thanksgiving pie, which was really too dry. Perhaps she’ll die.     (**what our class came up with together)

***I know an old lady who swallowed some cheese--old, moldy cheese that made her sneeze!

She swallowed the cheese to melt on the potatoes. She swallowed the potatoes to flavor the pie, the Thanksgiving pie, which was really too dry. Perhaps she’ll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a whole jug of milk, which magically transformed her hair into silk!

She swallowed the milk to cool off the cheese. She swallowed the cheese to melt on the potatoes. She swallowed the potatoes to flavor the pie, the Thanksgiving pie, which was really too dry. Perhaps she’ll die.  (***what I, Mrs. Allen, came up with on my own)

What We're Thankful For

With Thanksgiving less than a week away, we created our first official comic strips about what we are each thankful for in our lives. Aside from writing about what we are thankful for, one of our other goals was to use apostrophes correctly in contractions and possessive nouns to apply what we've been learning in spelling and grammar.  (Keep in mind that these comics are, for the most part, our first attempt at creating online comics, but we are looking forward to learning more throughout the year.)  Hope you enjoy reading them!
